Sonoma Plaza & Sonoma Valley
A Sonoma wine tour built around Sonoma Plaza usually starts with Buena Vista Winery and Gundlach Bundschu, the classic Sonoma Valley stops, both a short drive from the Plaza, which doubles as a walkable lunch base — the girl & the fig and Cafe La Haye are both on or just off the square. Glen Ellen & Kenwood
Tucked into the Valley of the Moon, Benziger Family Winery in Glen Ellen and Kunde Family Winery in Kenwood offer a quieter, more scenic version of a wine country day, with smaller pours and more time per stop than the busier Plaza-area tasting rooms. Glen Ellen itself is small enough to walk once you're there — Jack London State Historic Park sits just outside town on the same hillside as several of the wineries, a natural stop for groups splitting the day between tasting and a short hike. Kenwood's tasting rooms sit along Highway 12 with vineyard views on both sides, and Sugarloaf Ridge State Park nearby is a quiet detour if the itinerary has room for it. Because both towns are smaller and less trafficked than Sonoma Plaza, this route tends to suit travelers who want fewer stops with more time at each rather than a full day of back-to-back tastings.
Healdsburg & Russian River Valley
Further north, Jordan Vineyard & Winery and Ferrari-Carano sit closer to Healdsburg, a good base for cooler-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and the Russian River Valley AVA's fog-cooled mornings are exactly what makes those varietals work here. West of town, the Dry Creek Valley adds a Zinfandel-focused detour for groups who want to contrast it against the Pinot and Chardonnay closer to the river. Healdsburg Plaza itself is worth the extra drive time for lunch — SingleThread and Barndiva both sit on or just off the square, with the Farmhouse Inn Restaurant in nearby Forestville a destination-worthy alternative if the day is routed that way. For an overnight, Hotel Healdsburg and h2hotel are both walkable to the Plaza and are the properties most groups ask for. This is the longest of the three Sonoma sub-routes from the Bay Area, so it pairs best with a full-day rather than half-day booking.
Carneros
Carneros sits at the southern end of both Sonoma and Napa, where cool fog off San Pablo Bay lingers longer into the morning than almost anywhere else in wine country — ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and sparkling wine rather than the bigger reds Napa is known for further north. It's also the most practical stop to add on if a Sonoma day is running long and a Napa-bound group wants one shared destination, since Carneros wineries are reachable from either valley without much of a detour. Because it straddles the county line, tell us which side of Carneros you're headed to when booking so the route can be planned from the correct direction.
